This college is established in the year 2005-06; it holds the distinction of being the first Government College in the Historical and Heritage city of Bijapur. Presently is called as Vijayapur. The institution has its own land of 7.33 acre. At the beginning the college has no building of its own, and functioned in rented building (Gunderao Educational Trust, Bagalkot Road, Vijayapur). Later in the year 2009-10, the college was shifted to its own new building with carpet area of 1200 Sq. meter, having two floors, with 19 class rooms including laboratories, and there are separate well furnished principal chamber, administrative Office, Staff room, ladies room, sports department, library and an independent PG Department. At the beginning the handful of students has taken admission (200), slowly and steadily the college is moving forward, and crossed 1000 mark. The college is getting support by Department of Collegiate Education, CDC, President (Local MLA), members, Educationists and successive Principals took active part in developing college. The support and encouragement by the entire stakeholders, in the development of college cannot be overlooked.
The college is affiliated, to Karnataka University, Dharwad till the year 2010-11, and later to Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, 2011-12 onwards. The college at present runs four undergraduate programmes viz., B.A., B. Sc, B. Com., B.B.A., and two Post Graduate course viz.,Commerce (M. Com), MA (Political Science). The college is offering several other PG Courses viz., M.A. in Kannada, English, History, M. Sc in Mathematics and others in the near feature. The UGC granted recognition under 2 (f) in the year 2013 and 12(b) in the year 2017.
The college is situated in the heart of the city, near main Bus-stand. Most of the students come from neighboring villages. The college is mainly caters to the needs of the students belonging to rural areas and also to the disadvantaged sections of the society. Many of the students, especially girls are the first time pursuing degree course in their families.

The college is located in District place(Vijayapur). It is economically and educationally backward area (According to Nanjundappa Report) with dry arid zone situated in northern part of Karnataka.
