| About the College Gaining knowledge is the first step to wisdom; sharing it is the first step to humanity. Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College & PG Study Centre, Ajjarkadu, Udupi was founded by the Government of Karnataka with an aspired vision to “empower women so as to achieve excellence and imbibe virtues of discipline, commitment to social values and willingness to contribute to the well-being of society.” In addition to its unique stamp of being the only women’s government college in the district, the institution is also first-choice educational hub of the rural and economically disadvantaged students. The phenomenal growth of the institution could be assessed from the fact that the college that started in the year 2003-04 with a meager strength of 93 has risen to 2300 students in 2020-21. Truly, the institution is a forerunner of female education. With five Under-Graduate and five Post Graduate Courses on offer, the institution provides ample and smooth transitional scope to students from UG to PG in the same academic ambience. In addition, being a recognized IGNOU Study Centre and NPTEL-Local Chapter, the institution offers plethora of certificate courses to add to their vistas of knowledge. In collaboration with Unnathi Foundation, Bangalore, and Ramakrishna Hegde Skill Development Centre, Udupi, the institution also imparts Soft Skills and Communicative Skills Training Programme to students. As part of its commitment to knowledge-sharing, the institution has regularly hosted seminars, workshops, training programmes and conferences. In addition, with fourteen PhD holders, of which four of them are recognized Research Guides of various universities, the institution is making a mark as a portal of research in higher education. Named after Dr. G. Shankar, entrepreneur and philanthropist who has donated a substantial amount for the construction of classrooms, the college is an excellent example of stakeholders’ participation in the development of the college. Ideally located (Udupi District, Karnataka State) in the district headquarters, it is one of the fast emerging colleges of the district. The institution has tremendous scope for growth in the coming years and the institution is committed to achieve greater excellence in the days to come. |
