Government First Grade College, Srirangapatna was established in the year 1985 by the Government of Karnataka with an aim of providing Higher Education to the students of rural and backward regions of Srirangapatna Taluk. The College has its own building adjacent to Bangalore-Mysore Highway. The College is affiliated to University of Mysore, and the students pursue various undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce and Management and Science. The College mainly caters to the needs of students belonging to the rural background and also to the disadvantaged sections of the society. Many of our students are the first generation literates pursuing UG courses in their families. The College was assessed and accredited with ‘B’ Grade by the NAAC in 2015-16. Our College has 18 classrooms, Library with 21437 books, Computer lab, Science Laboratories and other supporting infrastructure. At present we have 419 students and the girls are in majority. University of Mysore designed CBCS syllabus for the UG courses since 2018-19 academic year. Our College has been recognized as RUSA funded College since 2015-16.
Srirangapatna is situated at a distance of 120 Kms from Bangalore on Bangalore Mysore highway is a place with reverberating History and Culture. Located near the city of Mysore, it is of great religious, cultural and historic importance. The entire town is enclosed by the river Kaveri to form a river island, while the main river flows on the eastern side of the island, the Paschima Vaahini segment of the same river flows to its west. The Paschima Vaahini section of the Kaveri at Srirangapatna is considered especially sacred; the people come from far and wide to immerse the ashes of the departed and perform obsequies to their ancestors in these waters. Even Mahatma Gandhiji’s ashes were immersed here.
The town takes its name from the celebrated Ranganathaswamy temple which dominates the town, making Srirangapattana one of the most important “Vaishnavite” centers of pilgrimage in south India. The temple was built by the Ganga dynasty rulers of the area in the 9th century; the structure was strengthened and improved upon architecturally some three centuries later. Srirangapattana became the capital of Mysore under Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and Wodeyar. Main attractions in Srirangapatna are Sri Narasimha Swamy Temple, Sri Gangadareswara Swamy Temple, Sri Nimishsambha Temple, Colbailey’s Dybgeon, The Gibigate, The Elephant Gate, The Delhi Gate, Site Of Tippu’s Death, Water Gate, Inman’s Dungeon, Masjid-E-Ala, Daria Daulath Bagh, Gumbaz, Sangam:, Abbe Dubeis Church, European Cemetery (Garrison Cemetery): , The British Monuments (Obelisk): , Karigatta Hill Plain. Near the town is the Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary, which is the breeding site for several bird species, including the Painted Stork, Open-billed Stork, Black-headed Ibis, River Tern, Great Stone Plover and Indian Shag.
