Institutional Distinctiveness – College’s Unique Activity

The Government First Grade College, Malleshwaram is known for its creative and innovative activities performed in the college in the interest of the society in general and students in particular. Many such innovative practices have been evolved in the college. However, the college takes pride to place on record that the activities undertaken in the Health Club is  a distinctive feature of the college. The Health Club began in the year 2016 as a major program of our institution. The goal of the program is to educate the students about nutritional values and its related support service to equip our students with basic life skills for healthy living. This will lead to improvement in health and educational outcomes. It includes the student’s retention of knowledge, academic performance and mental health for the holistic development of the students. To bring this goal to fruit the institution has translated the program into actions and activities. The health club is a vehicle that empowers students to play an active role in deciding and implementing issues related to their mental and physical health.

Students spend more than five hours in college each day. This makes it an important place through which their health can be influenced positively. Their health is important for their ability to learn, growth and development. Good health enhances academic performance in the institution. The concept of health club is to provide students an avenue to organize themselves to learn about issues that affect their health.

Objectives of the Health Club

To promote hygienic lifestyle among students.

  1. To promote healthy institutional environment.
  2. To increase student’s awareness about sanitation and hygiene.
  3. To encourage students to take this knowledge home and community.

Our college has taken the initiative to conduct several health programs to address the health issues of the students. On 4th and 5th of August 2016 free eye checkup camp in coordination with Lions club, Rajajinagar was held in our college. Honourable Dr Ashwath Narayan, the then MLA of Malleshwaram Constituency inaugurated the camp. The eye specialist technicians and supporting staff from Nethradhama multispecialty hospital examined around thousand students. The ive was to facilitate early deficiency, provide tips for protecting their eyes for the students.

Two days training of personality development was conducted by Sri Satya Sai Seva organization on 24th and 25th of March 2017. Two batches of students got the opportunity to get trained in personality development. Nearly 400 students were trained. Students and the staff took the oath of leading a life in a right path.

A blood donation camp was organized by our health club in collaboration with Lions club on 13th April 2017. Nearly 150 students and teachers also donated blood on the occasion. Be a hero donate blood was the tag line.

Free dental cheek up and awareness camp was organized by our health club in coordination with Partha dental clinic on 21st and 22nd July 2017. The camp was initiated with dental awareness talk, educating students about common dental ailments, especially stressing on tooth decay and gum diseases and measures to prevent from them.  The students were highlighted about the eating patterns and food choices which cause tooth decay.  On completion of the dental checkup each student was given a Patient Card, a report summary of the diagnosed problem and the recommended dental treatment plan. Nearly 1000 students could make use of the opportunity.

World Hepatitis Day is organized by The Health Club, GFGC, Malleshwaram, on 28th July 2017, at the auditorium of our college. With the availability of effective vaccines and treatments for hepatitis B and a cure for hepatitis C, the elimination of viral hepatitis is achievable.

Free checkup of PCOD for the girl students by Dr Chandrika, organized  in the month of March and April 2018. DR Chandrika MBBS MD ,a Gynecologist from Fortis hospital has examined nearly 300 girl students . Nearly 100 students were identified as having  PCOD . Girls were given prescription for anemic and other menstrual problems and asked to take medicines. Students having PCOD are recommended blood test which was conducted in college itself.

Motivational program by art of living – organized by health club on 22-03-2018 at GFGC , Malleshwaram by Art of living members. Free distribution of sanitary pads was organized by health Club in coordination with wow team and 92.7 big FM on 22-03-2018 in the college campus. Veteran Kannada actor Vasishta entertained the students and motivated the girls to come out of the menstrual inhibitions. Pat Pataki Shruthi from Big FM was the centre of attraction and six ladies from WOW team who sponsored 600 bags of sanitary pads containing 96 pieces each. Students were given awareness about menstruation and the myths around it.

Vitamin C Day was organized on 04-04-2018 to create an awareness on vitamin C to the staff and students of the College.

The free eye checkup and eye pledging camp organized by health club in association with Lions club, Rajajinagar, on Sept 6th and 7th 2018. The Eye Specialists Dr Nagesh B N, Dr Apoorva and technicians and supporting staff from the Nethradhama Multispecialty  hospital examined around 534 students. The ive of the general eye checkup was to facilitate early deficiency among the children and provide tips on caring for and protecting their eyes. Students from BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA 1st year and 2nd year students were screened by the specialists.

A program on Healthy habits was organized by Himalaya Drug House, in college campus on 21st September 2019. The team assisted students with the technique of hand wash, face wash and the personal hygiene. Students were given few sample pieces of face wash.

Free Dental check-up for the students of GFGC, Malleshwaram was organized on 25th October 2019, by ‘Clove Dental hospitals’ in association with the Health Club, Department of Sociology, Department of English, NCC, NSS and Red Cross. The camp included dental awareness talk, educating students about common dental ailments— especially stressing on tooth decay and gum diseases and the measures used to prevent them.

Communicative skills and personal hygiene workshop conducted by Rexona confidence academy –organized by the health club and department of English on - 25th Oct 2019.

World Cancer Day was observed in GFGC Malleshwaram. PG Students from M S Ramaiah had organized an awareness skit focusing on Breast Cancer. 2019- World Cancer Day is a campaign built to resonate, inspire change and mobilize action.

A free covid-19 test was conducted on 08-09-2020 in GFGC Malleshwaram. The covid-19 free test for all the teaching and non-teaching staff was organized by the Health club. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has arranged for free testing facility for all the 198 wards across the city.

A webinar on Awareness Perceptions and Attitude concerning covid-19 Pandemic   was organized by Health club on 16th October 2020 at college campus. Dr Tejaswi from Madras Mission Hospital presented his views and suggestions in controlling and avoids getting infected by Covid -19.Nearly 175 students and their families were benefited by the program.
