As directed by the former Maharaja of Mysore His Highness Shri. The college was established as ‘Municipal College’ in the housing board unit on 03rd August 1971, by the constant efforts of the former MLA Shri. M. Basavaraju and the local Patron Shri. K S Gowdaiah. The college obtained affiliation from the University of Mysore, under the leadership of the founder Principal Sri. J.R. Nanjundegowda. BA, BSc and B.Com courses were started and around 80 students were enrolled. 5.16 acres of land was granted by Municipality under the Presidentship of Sri. K.S. Sannaningegowda. The Construction work of the building was initiated by then Chief Minister. Shri. D.Devraja Urs.
By 1980 the student strength of the college crossed 500. Principal Prof. P.Mallegowda’s effort resulted in the construction of three new classrooms and main gate in 1983 by utilizing the donation given by Shri.Veerendra Heggade, Dharmasthala. At the same time college got recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC) too.
The college was taken over by the Government of Karnataka on 06th February 1990. It was rechristened as the Government First Grade College. The institution registered constant growth in terms of number of students within few years crossing the four digit number. With the constant efforts of college staff and local community, the college improved its service by adding new combinations. For many years our College single handedly served the need of the higher education.
Under the able leadership of Principal Dr. N. Nagaraju institution reached new heights. He dreamed of converting a rural college into a place of quality education, where PG and Distance education is available along with regular UG courses. His vision and efforts in this directions paved way for their realization.
Introduction of new courses, construction of open air theater (Aniketana), construction of additional classrooms, establishment of study center of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) are few of the developments seen during this period. He initiated the process of the introduction of PG courses and the construction of separate buildings for science and commerce departments, for the construction of Women’ hostel, by obtaining grants from UGC.
The College was subjected to the NAAC accreditation process in the year 2004 and obtained ‘C’ grade. In the recent years college has gained momentum in the direction of development due to the financial assistance from both State Government and University Grants Commission. College enjoys the 2(f) and 12B status.
College has about two thousand (2000) students mostly from the surrounding villages. Most of the students are from economically poor, socially backward and illiterate family background. The situation poses challenges in terms of educating them, and also provides opportunities in the form of maximum flexibility to mould the personality and future of students. College has succeeded fairly in this regard.
For more than three decades our institution was the only source of higher education for the student pool of surrounding areas. Various clubs provide ample opportunity for the students to showcase their talents. Natural talents of rural students like cultural activities and sports are tapped more effectively. The achievements in sports and cultural events, is a reflection of this.
Institution has updated itself to the recent needs and challenges by introducing new courses and acquiring new infrastructure. College has the distinction of introducing Criminology and Forensic Science subject in Arts stream. Recently Public Administration and Journalism courses are introduced. At PG level Master of Social Welfare (MSW) course, M.A in Kannada and MCom courses have been inducted and one student from the first batch got University rank in Kannada.
The science departments who were functioning in rented houses were shifted to newly constructed ‘Science Block’ in the main campus. Now all the science departments have the all-inclusive necessary infrastructure for their functioning. All the necessary modern lab equipment, ICT tools are available in the institution. The college library has a very good number of books covering almost all the subjects.
Institution has well qualified community of teachers for all the subjects. With very high teacher student ratio they have more responsibilities to take up. And the dedication and the hard work of the staff can be seen in the results and infrastructural developments co-curricular and extracurricular events. The support of the College Development Council, the active involvement of local community leaders and personalities is commendable.
Currently, with the constant and continuous efforts of all the staff and students, institution is changing and updating itself to the challenges in the field of higher education, under the leadership of Principal Prof. Prasannakumar
