Profile of the Department

Introduction

In concurrence with the principle and the policy of the Government, in spreading the significance of learning basic sciences and to extend the applications of Sciences the Department of Physics was established on 01st July 1971 in the newly formed Municipal First Grade College, wherein the strength of the students was just 80. With the public interest and with the constant efforts of the staff, the Municipal First Grade College was taken over by the Government of Karnataka on 06th February 1990 and was rechristened as the “Government First Grade College, KR Nagar”. The college has now grown into an institution that provides accommodation to strength of 2400 rural students.

As a messenger, apart from imparting academics, the Department of Physics in collaboration with the other departments, has catered to the urging needs of the various fragments of the society, has played a major role in quenching the knowledge thirst of the stake holders, has paved a smooth path in retaining men-women equality, in empowering the rural force to scale up the far heights and in upholding the much wanted social justice.

Mission

The mission of the department, in accordance with the mission of the college is to create a beneficial environment for the students to learn the fundamentals, concepts, various laws governing the subject, to develop a love towards the subject and to feel that facts are sacred as Physics rests on scientific facts and assumptions.

Vision

Apart from consistently adopting the interdisciplinary approach to study the required subject with useful interrelations with other branches of science, the department of Physics positively, utterly and faithfully concurs with that of the vision statement of the college.

Pioneers of the Department

Prof. K. Narashima Murthy, the first Head of the Department contributed his level best to build the Physics Department. Out of his hard efforts, a laboratory exclusively for Physics department was established. As soon as the college was taken over by the Government, he was transferred to Maharani’s Science College, Mysore.

Prof. S.B. Appaji Gowda took charge of the department on 06thAugust 1990 from Prof. K. Narashima Murthy. Using his good office, he persistently concentrated in the continuous development of the department. He served the department till 11-07-1998. Later on he too was transferred to Maharani’s Science College, Mysore. Prof. S. Udayashankar was transferred to the vacant place of Dr. S.B. Appaji Gowda on July 1998. He too contributed his might in developing the department academically. Miss Roopa was deputed to the department, owing to the routine transfer of Prof. S. Udayashankar.

Prof. A. Thomas Gunaseelan and Prof. M. Subramanyam of St. Philomena’s College, Mysore were deputed under redeployment on 04th April 2010 and joined the department. Prof. A. Thomas Gunaseelan assumed the office of the HOD on 04th April 2010. Soon after the arrival of these two faculty members, Miss Roopa, who had a very short stay here, went back to her parent college at Gundulpet. During this time the labs were not established as the college was functioning at the old campus. Out of the indefatigable endeavors of Prof. A. Thomas Gunaseelan and Prof. M. Subramanyam all the apparatus, devices, instruments, gadgets, equipment, tools, models, containers, consumables, chests, furniture, solid working tables, machinery, optical bench, projection screen, glassware, etc.. were shifted to the new labs at the present premises. The department places on record and appreciates the labour and toil of these two teachers in establishing a fully-fledged independent laboratory.

Dr. S.B. Appaji Gowda again returned to the department after his successful service in Madikeri and in Mandya and took the charge as HOD from Prof. A. Thomas Gunaseelan during July 2011. The department of Physics, the only Science department to have three permanent teachers, has been executing the amusing task of spreading and imparting the knowledge of Science to the rural stakeholders, without any hindrance. After a brief stay as a teacher, Dr. S.B. Appaji Gowda was elevated to the post of Principal in Charge of our college on 01st July 2014. In due course of time, he was transferred to Government First Grade College, Bannur as Principal in Charge. To fill in the void created out of this, Miss C. Manjula joined the Department of Physics as a Guest Lecturer on 08th June 2014. Owing to the increase in the admission of Students, to take care of the increase in the work load, Mr. S.R. Avinash was appointed as a Guest Lecturer on 22nd September 2015. In order to meet the requirements of filling up of the vacancies that arose

Teaching and Learning Methods

The department of Physics is not contended with the conventional method of teaching alone, instead prefers to walk an extra mile in employing a variety of teaching learning methods such as

1) Lecture Method: Involves the chalk and talk activity, along with the teacher introducing the concept

and explaining in his own style with illustrations.

2) Seminars:  The students are encouraged to take part in seminars with the aim in emphasizing the self-

teaching technique and in honing up their skills of public speaking.

3) Quiz: The students are exposed to Quiz programs to sharpen their memory power and to keep them

   up updated.

4) Practical: Demonstration constitutes the core of practical classes wherein students get full freedom in

exhibiting their talents by arriving at accurate results.

5) Projects: To improve their personality and to establish their identities, students are given projects

through which they master the skill of self-proficiency.

6) Teaching Aids: ICT based teaching is introduced to comprehend the difficult concepts. This is achieved

     through OHP, LCD systems.

7) Evaluation: The department continuously assesses the progress of the students by conducting unit

tests and directing them to write assignments. Students are subjected to Mock tests in practical too.

Future Plans:

1)      Introduction of Electronics stream/combination.

2)      Introduction of Computer Science stream/combination.

3)      To organise various academic programs such as seminars, lecture series, group discussions, poster presentations, model making techniques, Power Pont Slides preparation, Science Journalism etc.

Physics Department strongly believes that education is not a mere instrument or a key to the future world of opportunities, but it stresses and means the need to attain self realisation and to be an ultimate guide to the way of life.
