- The College
Krishnarajanagar has been planned and constructed in 1934 to relocate the submerged village ‘Edathore’ due to the construction of Krishnarajasagara Dam (KRS). The place is honoured being planned by the legendary ‘Sir M Vishweshwariah’ under the instruction of his highness Shri. Nalvadi Krishna Raja Wodeyer. It is a commercial and educational centre for many villages.
The college was established as ‘Municipal College’ in housing boards in03-08-1971, by the constant efforts of M.Basavaraju (MLA) and K S Gowdiah. The college obtained affiliation from the University of Mysore. Under the leadership of founder Principal J.R.Nanjundegowda BA, BSc and B.Com courses started and 80 students enrolled. 5.16 acres of land was granted by Municipality under the presidentship of K.S.Sannaningegowda. Construction work of the building was initiated by the then Chief Minister. D.Devraja Urs.
By 1980 the student strength of the college crossed 500. Principal P.Mallegowda’s effort resulted in the construction of three new classrooms and the main gate in 1983 by the donation of Shri.Veerendra Heggade, Dharmasthala. At the same time, the college got recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC).
The college was taken over by the Government of Karnataka in 06-02-1990. It was renamed Government First Grade College. The institution registered constant growth in terms of the number of students within few years crossing four-digit number. With the constant efforts of college staff and local community college improved its service by adding new combinations. For many years our College single-handedly served the need of higher education in the area.
Under the able leadership of Principal Dr. N. Nagaraju institution reached new heights. He dreamed of converting a rural college into a place of quality education, where PG and Distance education is available along with regular UG courses. His vision and efforts in this direction paved way for their realization. The introduction of new courses, construction of an open-air theatre (Aniketana), construction of additional classrooms, and establishment of study center of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) are few of the developments during the period. He initiated the process for, the introduction of PG courses and the construction of separate buildings for science and commerce departments, obtaining grants from UGC for the construction of Women’ hostel. College went for NAAC accreditation process in the year 2004 and obtained ‘C’ grade. In the recent years college has gained momentum in the direction of development due to the abundance of financial assistance from both State Government and the University Grants Commission. The college has 2(f) and 12B status.
The college has about two thousand (2000) students mostly from the surrounding villages. Most of the students are from the economically poor, socially backward and illiterate family backgrounds. The situation poses challenges in terms of educating them, and also provides opportunities in the form of maximum flexibility to mould the personality and future of students. College has succeeded fairly in this regard. For more than three decades our institution was the only source of higher education for the student pool of surrounding areas. Various clubs provide ample opportunities for students to express their talent. Natural talents of rural students like cultural activities and sports are tapped more effectively. The achievements in sports and cultural events is a reflection of this.
Institutions updated itself to the recent needs and challenges by introducing new courses and acquiring new infrastructure. The Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) course is enjoying much popularity among students. The college has the distinction of introducing Criminology and Forensic Science subjects in Arts stream. Recently Public Administration and Journalism courses are introduced. At PG level one batch is already in final semester of the Master of Social Welfare (MSW) course, and M.A. in Kannada course has started and one student from the first batch got University rank.
The science departments that were functioning in rented houses shifted to the newly constructed ‘Science Block’ in the main campus. Now all the science departments have the entire necessary infrastructure for their functioning. All the modern lab types of equipment, and ICT tools are available in the institution. The college library has a very good number of books ranging all the subjects.
The institution has a well-qualified pool of teachers for all the subjects. With a very high teacher-student ratio they have more responsibilities to take. But the dedication and hard work of the staff can be seen in the results and infrastructural development of co-curricular and extracurricular events. The support of the College Development Council and the active involvement of local community leaders and personalities is commendable.
With the constant efforts of all the staff and students, the institution is changing and updating itself to the challenges in the field of higher education.
