The Red cross society was established in 1863 in Geneva,Switzerland.The father of Red cross movement and recipient of noble award for pesce in 1901 was ‘Jean Henry Durant’. Indian Red cross society was established in 1920.Under the Indian red cross society act 1920.It is a member of the international committee of the red cross. It aims to inspire, encourage and initiate at all times, all forms of humanitarian activities. During world war1 several countries encouraged young peoples to assist in red cross work. By 1921,Youth sections had been created in many countries. In 1922,the youth programs of the Red cross was officially recognized.Today,about 100 National Red cross and Red crescent societies have sections dedicated to engaging young peoples. Students in colleges and those aged 18 to 30 years of age may join the Red cross.

 

Activities of Red cross unit: 

  • Service to the community
  • Health activities.HIV and AIDS campaigns, accident prevention and first aid.
  • Community based social welfare activities, environmental activities, and disaster preparedness programs.
  • Encourage young peoples in the society to participate welfare activities.
  • Organize blood donation and health awareness programs.
  • Awareness on road safety, climate change and be safe programs.

 Objectives of Red Cross:

  1. Understand the community in which they work
  2. Understand themselves in relation to their community
  3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
  4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  5. Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
  6. Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities
  7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
