| Government College Kalaburagi is one of the oldest and leading institutions of higher learning in the educationally backward region of Hyderabad Karnataka region. The Government College, Gulbarga was stared in the year 1932 as an Intermediate College affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad in the erstwhile Nizam Government .Later with formation of new state of Karnataka in the year 1952 it was upgraded to a Degree college affiliated to Karnataka University, Dharwad. In the beginning B.A. and B. Sc. program was offered in various disciplines including languages. In the year 1980, when Gulbarga University was established in Kalaburagi, the college got affiliated to it. In the subsequent years i.e 1986, 2001, 2006 many UG courses such as B.Com., B.Sc. (Computer Science), and B.B.M. were started in the college. Thus, Government College, Kalaburagi became one among the few colleges in the Hyderabad Karnataka Region to offer UG courses in various faculties. The college added another cap to its feather, when Gulbarga University recognized it as PG centre and allowed to start PG courses in History and Economics in the year 2007. In the subsequent years many PG courses were started and at present 09 PG courses in various disciplines including Commerce, Mathematics and Computer Science are offered in the college. Present strength of the college is about 3000 students. Government College Kalaburagi caters to the needs of socially and economically backward students of this area. Over 80% of students of the college belong to SC/ST/OBC/Minority community. About 40% of the students are girl students. College has well qualified faculty to impart good education to students. Most of the faculty members have higher qualification such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. The College has been recognized as Research Center by Gulbarga University and many of its faculty members are Research Guides to the students pursuing M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. Faculty members are actively involved in research activities. At present there are Five major and Thirty Two minor research projects undertaken by the faculty members of the college. Besides this, the faculty members have published many research articles in national and international journals. In the academic year 2013-14, the faculty members have published 28 research papers in various disciplines. Many faculty members have been honored with awards and recognition for their academic excellence. The college is situated in the heart of Gulbarga city with a campus area of 11.03 acres. The college has multistoried building with built up area of around 85000 sq.ft. It has adequate number of classrooms, laboratories, library, administrative building and sports ground. The academic performance of students is observed to be very high obtaining a number of ranks consistently in the university examination. The college has active NCC, NSS, Red Cross and Scouts & Guides cells which have been organizing various events throughout the academic calendar. Assessing the institution on several parameters of quality NAAC has re-accredited Government College Gulbarga with ‘A’ Grade in 2012.It is the only Government College in the entire Hyderabad Karnataka region which has been re-accredited with “A” grade by NAAC. It is the Fifth government college in the entire state to achieve such feat. The Government College, Kalaburagi has now acquired Autonomous Status granted by UGC from 2016-17. |
