Government Arts, Commerce & Post-Graduate College – Autonomous, Hassan, provides higher education to the students from rural areas and economically weaker sections of the society in the Semi Malnad area. College was started in 1946 as an intermediate college in Hassan as an extension policy of the Government to promote Higher Education. In the beginning the classes were held in Municipal High School building. In 1949 the college building was sanctioned by the then Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodeyar of Mysore State. The college was extended to one-year pre-university course in 1958-59. It was upgraded to First Grade College and first batch of degree holders came out in 1961. As the number of students seeking higher education increased the college was bifurcated as Science and Arts College in 1983-84. The college obtained permanent affiliation from University of Mysore, in 2002. The UGC accorded its recognition to our college under section 2(f) and 12(B) on 31/01/2003. The college was first accredited by NAAC in the year 2003, & secured ‘B’ Grade with CGPA 72.00, and reaccredited by NAAC during October 2018 & was awarded ‘A’ grade with CGPA of 3.02. This is valid up to December 2020. It is a matter of great privilege to state that the University of Mysore, Mysore in pursuant of the approval of the UGC and the Government of Karnataka has granted ‘Autonomous Status’ to the college wide Order No. CDC-1/UG/PG/106/New Autonomous/2015-16, dated 28/10/2015 for a period of 6 years from 2015-16 to 2020-21. The institution is reputed as one amongst very few government colleges in the state to be conferred with autonomy. In a survey conducted by a National Level journal called CAREER – 360 in its July 2016 edition, identified 80 quality colleges in Karnataka state, (both private and government colleges) According to the survey Govt. Arts College, Hassan, stands 2nd amongst the government first grade colleges in Karnataka for its excellence and status in academic pursuits. Among the 80 colleges ours stands 54th position.
The Human Development Magazine called “Education World” April 2020 edition, announces the position among the Govt. autonomous colleges in the National Level, our institution stands 13th rank in the national level and 4th rank in the state level. College effectively runs B. A., B. Com., & BBA., courses at the UG level, and The College has become a Post-graduate center from the year 2007-08 Started with Sociology & Economics. In the year 2013-14 the Political Science has been started. In the year 2016-17 English started, in 2017-18 successively started M.Com., at the PG level. We applied Govt. & University to get permission start M A in History and MSW. We introduced CBCS system (2016-17) in UG Level & P G (2007-08). Syllabus d as per UGC & Parent University guidelines. In the history of collegiate education college has introduced 05 certificate courses at a time, (In the year 2016-17) & one foundation course has introduced (Human Rights) & also two short term certificate courses have been introduced. The present strength of the college is 2419 (UG & PG). Most of the student’s hail from rural areas, & around 98% of the Students are belongs to SC, ST & OBC. Our institution has participated in state level and national level sports events also. The students of the college are endowed with social consciousness through participating in NSS, NCC, Red Cross, Red Ribbon, Scouts & Guides etc., they are rendering valuable social service like blood donation, AIDS awareness, tree plantation etc, In 2016-17 our college renamed as ‘Government Arts, Commerce & Post-Graduate College, Autonomous Hassan.
Evaluation plays a pivotal role in the working of an autonomous institution. Hence, the examination section headed by the controller of examinations and assisted by an examination committee is formed with needed infrastructure & computerized.
The highly qualified and well-experienced teaching faculty offers constant guidance to the students at every step to ensure their all-round development in addition to giving instruction. As the students lack of communicative skill, Spoken English classes are conducted for them. We facilitate online tele-edusat and edu-sat programme to learn Spoken English, Computer Basics & Personality Development. The Department of Collegiate Education introducing ‘Jnana Sangama’ project in our college to enrich students’ English knowledge, computer skill, online attendance, e-content download facility & PPT in the classrooms etc., Teachers are making every effort to update their knowledge and skills by participating & publishing their research papers in National & International Seminars. Different 16 committees are constituted for academic excellence and personality development of the students. We introduced dress code as uniform to all students. The college publishes the annual magazine “Kalaashri”. For quality enhancement, the college provides Wi-Fi, free internet access and other teaching-learning resources to the students and teachers.
