NSS

The NSS unit of the college has been established since from the bifurcation of the college (Academic Year 2000-01). M/S Ashwathamma was served as first NSS officer. Total 100 students are enrolled for NSS activities among which 50 students are selected for 10 days special annual camp. Due to increase in the student strength of the college , University has sanctioned additional NSS unit - 2 during the academic year 2014. Every year NSS units function as per the guidelines formed by the affiliating university.   Presently 200 students are serving (Both Unit -1 and 2, under NSS scheme among which 100 students are selected for special camps.

 Aim: 

The programme aims to instilling the idea of social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity.

In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. It also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster's victims.

Objectives: 

The main ives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are :

  • understand the community in which they work
  • understand themselves in relation to their community
  • identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  • develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  • develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  • gain skills in mobilising community participation
  • acquire disciplin, timly, leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  • develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  • practise national integration and social harmony

 Types of Activities:

There are two types of activities: Regular Activities(120 hours) and Annual Special Camp(120 hours). All the NSS Volunteers who have served NSS for at least 2 years and have performed 240 hours of work under NSS are entitled to a certificate from the university under the signature of the Vice-Chancellor and the Programme Coordinator. The Annual camps are known as Special Camps.

Volunteers may be involved in such activities as:

  1. Cleaning
  2. Afforestation
  3. Stage shows or a procession creating awareness of such issues as social problems, education and cleanliness
  4. Awareness Rallies
  5. Inviting doctors for health camps
  6. Community Survey

There are no predefined or preassigned tasks; it is left up to the volunteers to provide service in any way that is feasible. Camps typically last between a week (7 days), although camps for shorter periods are also conducted by NSS.

Motto:

The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person's point of view and also show consideration to '/other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrined in this motto, which underlines/on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

Symbol:

The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.

Badge:

The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

Financial Assistance:

The scheme is funded by both Central and State Governments to organise Regular Activities (RA) and special Camping Programmes (SCP). An amount of Rs.165/-per volunteer per annum is released towards Regular Activities (RA) and Rs.650/- per volunteer per Special Camping Programme (SCP) which is of 7-days duration to be organised in the adopted villages/communities.
