Time is eternal. From the recesses of segments of time, a sense of achievement and joy emergesing us to highlight that piece of time. We, at Maharani’s Science College for Women, Bangalore, are on the threshold of entering 75th year in service to the cause of women’s education. The ever-shining hall marks of science education the college has offered since its inception have been quality, variety and financial viability. This great institution has a royal lineage and was established in the year 1938 by the erstwhile maharaja of Mysore His Highness Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar in the hallowed memory of his mother Vani Vilasa Sannidhana Kempananjammanniyavaru. The formative years of the college witnessed not-so-impressive student statistics, but a strong attitude towards enriching the society with the knowledge of science and empowering women.
This tradition has continued and the institution has produced many women of strength, who have not only proved their l as students of science, but have earned laurels for themselves in diverse fields. As the college progressed and gained reputation its strength increased many fold and a separate arts and commerce section was carved out in 1976 creating the adjoining Maharini’s Arts college.
The science college continued its illustrious journey in the heritage building growing in strength and stature. Today the college has an annex building with the PG section, a separate two storied library block with about 65000 books, 12 journals, 20 popular magazines and 11 newspapers. The library also houses the reading room and provides internet facilities. The college hostel with 50 rooms is a home away from home for our students.
The college has at present 13 science departments and 7 language departments. It runs 15 combinations in Undergraduate and 5 post graduate courses. The support of 106 teaching faculty and adequate number of non teaching faculty has contributed largely towards creating a robust academic culture. Our students have made us proud by securing university ranks. Apart from Departmental Clubs which conduct seminars in their respective subjects, several fora have been established with the intention of encouraging diverse interests. Sabala-Women’s Forum, Nisarga-Environmental Club, Kannadathi- Kannada Forum and Bhasha Sangama – All Language Forum are the thematic fora which are doing wonderful work.
The cultural association of the college ‘Samskrithi’ has been splashing colours to the campus life. The NCC wing of the college that was the very first women’s battalion for Karnataka, with the first lady officer, continues the legacy of inculcating the spirit of nationalism in our students. The NSS wing imparts the spirit of service among students. The zeal for expanding and intensifying our activities has only increased with the passage of time
